History (How Did It Start?)

Author: Ju-ve Chankasemporn

After being part of the SIGGRAPH community since 2017, I’m thrilled to share that at the beginning of Fall 2025, I officially started the DigiPen ACM SIGGRAPH Student Chapter at DigiPen Institute of Technology .

As of October 27, 2025, we have been chartered by ACM’s Chief Operating Officer, which means we’re now officially operating under the sponsorship of ACM and the SIG Governing Board!

I still can’t believe that I’m starting something this meaningful at the university I’ve dreamed of attending since 2016.

🌟 Why Did I Decide to Start the Chapter?

Ever since I began volunteering for SIGGRAPH, I noticed that there were hardly any DigiPen students participating at the conference, whether in Asia or North America, even though DigiPen is renowned for Game Development and Computer Graphics, with Real-Time Interactive Simulation as its core major since the early 2000s.

At SIGGRAPH 2025 in Vancouver, I spoke with Amira Malcom and Professor Kevin McNulty about founding a chapter here. Thanks to their encouragement and support, this plan became a reality.

🚀 How Did It Start and How’s It Going?

I first reached out to Beth Chaney to express my interest in creating a SIGGRAPH student organization, and thanks to her guidance, the process was straightforward.

We kicked things off with our first session: “Introduction to SIGGRAPH,” which turned out to be our biggest event yet! I was so glad to see many students excited about the Student Volunteer (SV) program.

Since then, we’ve hosted:

  • Two follow-up meetups: Student Game Showcase and Game Jam Strategies
  • One special event where we gave our guest, Shuyi Yang, a tour of DigiPen and the Boeing Museum of Flight.

🎬 What’s Next?

We’re planning more events to recruit new members and expand our community. Our next event will explore how quaternions made Toy Story possible, and with our official charter, we also plan to screen the Computer Animation Festival (CAF) to bring more art-focused students into the chapter.

💡 Our Vision

At the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2026 in Los Angeles, I hope to see a group of DigiPen students proudly saying “Proud to be SV!”—connecting with peers from around the world, and continuing this tradition for years to come.

I want to thank the vice-president, the secretary, the treasurer, and the officers for making this happen. Anish Murthy Salam Sibai Sheung Him Martin chow Rahul Nair Sumin Park Lizzie, and Sandeep.
